5G in India: Country rolls out 5G cellular network for eight cities in ‘step towards recent era’


Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has launched the 5G telecom network within the country and termed it the start of a “step towards the brand new era.”

The following generation of mobile telephony, a step above India’s already existing 4G network, will probably be available to residents almost five years after the primary steps towards its launch were taken.

Connectivity will probably be opened up to cover all the country over the following couple of years.

The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to achieve $450bn by 2035, in keeping with officials.

“This event will probably be etched in history,” said Mr Modi, launching the services within the presence of the country’s telecom providers at an event in Recent Delhi on Saturday.

He added that this was “the start of infinite opportunities” and a “step towards the brand new era within the country”.

Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani, whose company is one in every of the primary players within the country’s telecom sector, was present throughout the event.

Reliance’s telecom company Jio will launch inexpensive 5G services and canopy all the country by December 2023, Mr Ambani said.

Also on the event, federal minister of state for communications Devusinh Jesingbhai Chauhan said the country will “surely make 6G soon”.

Bharti Airtel, Jio’s competitor, will probably be launching the service in eight Indian cities, including in 4 metros, on Saturday.

Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said they may progressively cover all the country by March 2024.

“With 2G, 3G and 4G, India was depending on other nations. Nevertheless, with 5G, India has set the worldwide standard in telecom technology,” Mr Modi said on the event.

“5G can unleash recent economic opportunities and societal advantages, giving it the potential for being a transformational force for Indian society,” said an official government release, in keeping with news channel NDTV.

“It’s going to help the country leapfrog the normal barriers to development, spur innovations by startups and business enterprises.”
