Alan Titchmarsh, 73, has offered his advice to gardeners across the country because the UK continues to face freezing temperatures. Before we will benefit from the brighter Spring weather, which is anticipated at the tip of March, Alan has set out what it’s best to and shouldn’t be doing in your garden.

Talking to Express.co.uk, the Love Your Weekend star said: “Don’t rush to sow seeds and plant seedlings.

“There’s loads of time for that when the weather warms up.

“But do take a walk across the garden and see where latest plantings could brighten things up.”

As for what it’s best to plant, Alan suggested “all types of trees, shrubs and roses”.

The duo are encouraging people to finish the NHS bowel cancer screening kit.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most typical cancer within the UK and detecting the condition earlier increases the probabilities of being successfully treated.

The fast test is accomplished at home and involves taking a tiny sample of poo using the plastic stick provided, placing it within the sample bottle and sending it back to the NHS, freed from charge, for laboratory evaluation.

Explaining why this campaign is so vital to him, Alan told us: “I’m hugely supportive of the ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign and the vital message it’s spreading.

The presenter explained: “Mercifully [they] made what we hope is a full recovery.

“It’s a worrying and daunting process but one which can offer complete recovery if caught soon enough. I can’t overstate how imprint that’s.”

People concerned that they might have missed their invitation or have lost or thrown away their kit can call the free bowel cancer screening helpline for advice on 0800 707 60 60. Information on bowel cancer and the screening programme may be found here.

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs Sundays at 9.30am on ITV.
