‘Immediately, I used to be doing the mental arithmetic in my head, and it had stopped at that time for me just being there and having fun and a joke – that finished when Matt got here. I even have interviewed enough of the families which have lost family members through the pandemic. I’m certainly one of those.

As an alternative, she opted to sleep outside – meaning there was then less selection for the others.

Ms White said: ‘I didn’t want anyone to feel like I used to be being too sympathetic to Matt because that may jeopardise the job that I like and jeopardise my journalistic integrity. It could have shattered the impartiality I’ve consistently had the past 20 years.

‘In my heart I felt if I didn’t represent those people who find themselves still grieving and still hurting, if I do not take into consideration them and ask the questions that I would like to know regarding his reasoning for getting into the jungle… then I’m not doing my job.

‘It went from me having fun to me continually worrying about whether or not I could still do my job once I got here out.’

She added: ‘Since I got back to the hotel, I even have showered thrice, I even have washed my hair twice, I even have drunk lots and plenty and plenty of water that does not taste like smoke. I’m not very hungry straight away. I’m still overwhelmed.’
