The Latest York Giants are heading into the 2022 season with fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones under center. It’s reportedly his last likelihood to display that he was definitely worth the sixth overall selection within the 2019 NFL draft.
Many consider the Giants are wasting their time with Jones and will have moved on. Others see Jones as a player who’s about to pop and develop into a star.
In recent rating of the “NFL’s Seven Worst Veteran Starting Quarterbacks Entering the 2022 Season” from Ian Wharton of Bleacher Report, Jones is available in at No. 5.
Since his collegiate days at Duke, Jones has never been an overlay accurate or protected passer with the ball. He shouldn’t have been drafted so highly within the 2019 class based on those tendencies. Former general manager Dave Gettleman banked on the occasional big play and solid deep-passing prowess of Jones and neglected skittishness within the pocket and the penchant for turnovers.
There hasn’t been lots to point toward in favor of Jones becoming a median passer beyond a number of flashes. His rookie touchdown rate of 5.2 percent helped construct optimism he could overcome the negative plays as long as he created more positive plays, like an early-career Carson Wentz or Jameis Winston. But his touchdown rate has plummeted to 2.5 and a pair of.8 percent during the last two years.
Wharton also points out that while Jones has reduced his turnovers, he still stays at the underside of the league in yards per completion and completion percentage, although he predominantly throws short passes.
Latest head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, two men who’ve been partly liable for the success of Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, together with a revamped offensive line should send Jones into an upward trajectory this 12 months, but his track record may very well be too difficult to beat.
