Freeview issues necessary alert as some users face channel loss

Since that major incident happened, and the mast was taken offline, temporary equipment has been used to maintain homes across the north east and North Yorkshire connected to Freeview’s services but that fix is about to finish with the official mast coming back online soon.

In the course of the switchover – which is being managed by a firm called Arqiva – many homes may find they should retune their set-top devices to maintain watching channels and there might be minor disruption as tests are carried out. “In the times prior to go-live the antennas can be thoroughly tested. Viewers may experience some short disruption to their TV services,” Freeview said in an updated blog post.

“No motion must be taken during testing and existing services can be returned once testing is complete.”

Although most users won’t see dramatic disruption to their nightly viewing, a small number could find they lose High Definition (HD) channels altogether.

Freeview has confirmed that this may last for a number of weeks whilst additional equipment is installed on the foremost mast. “Over the following few weeks Arqiva can be finalising work on the brand new Bilsdale mast,” Freeview explained. “Over 99% of households usually are not expected to must take any motion beyond a retune when the brand new mast is switched on.

“Nevertheless, a small variety of households may not mechanically profit from the signals from the brand new mast and will temporarily lose access to HD services for a number of weeks while a further antenna is installed on the brand new mast.”

Freeview says that homes set to be affected will receive a notification of the upcoming disruption and get support from TV engineers.

It is also price noting that although HD channels will disappear, standard definition services shouldn’t be affected.

In case you live within the north east or North Yorkshire – here is easy methods to retune your device

Freeview has issued advice on easy methods to retune devices and listed below are the steps every user must follow.

• Press menu in your box or TV handheld remote control

• Select ‘set-up’, ‘installation’, ‘update’ or the same option. In case you’re asked for a password, the default code is ‘1234’ or ‘0000’.

• Select ‘first-time installation’ (sometimes called ‘factory reset’, ‘full retune’ or ‘default settings’).

•Press ‘OK’ in case your equipment asks if it’s OK to delete existing channels after which your retune should start mechanically. In case you’re prompted to, save the channels which might be found.
