Heat pump POLL: Would you put in a heat pump to enhance energy efficiency of your house? | Science | News


Britons are being encouraged to interchange their gas boilers with energy-efficient heat pumps to assist save on energy bills. Property designer and presenter of the Channel 4 series Grand Designs Kevin McCloud has called for Britons to put in a heat pump to assist improve the energy efficiency of their homes. But will you put in one? Vote in our poll.

He told The Telegraph last week: “[Heat pumps] are getting more efficient, but I’d say get one now. 

“They’re still a bit of expensive but the purpose is that it’s not complex technology and it’s not likely going to alter when it comes to the offer.

“All that’s going to occur over the following 10 years is that they’ll come down in price because they might be produced in vast volumes.”

Despite the long-term advantages heat pumps will bring to energy bills, they’ve a high upfront cost.

Installation costs between £10,000 and £14,000 which is greater than 10 times the typical £1,500 gas boiler.

The UK Government launched the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in March which provides £5,000 subsidy to support Britons in replacing their gas boilers with heat pumps.

The aim is to make heat pumps cheaper and permit them to compete with traditional boilers.

Heat pumps operate like a refrigeration system in reverse by transferring the cold air outside to heat your house.

Octopus Energy has pledged to support Britons by driving the costs of warmth pumps down further.

Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson told Express.co.uk earlier this month: “Heat pumps are probably the most efficient strategy to heat your house…they’re three or 4 times more energy efficient (than gas boilers).”

He added: “Octopus goes to be driving this, and already to the appropriate homes, we’re installing heat pumps for a value of about £2,500 after you may have received your Government grant.

“Our plan is to maintain driving down the fee so because the market grows, they are going to ultimately be a price that is just not dissimilar to a gas boiler.”
