James Cameron breaks even! Avatar sequel crosses $2 billion at box office and becomes one in every of the ‘sixth highest-grossing movies of all time’

Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed $2 billion globally on the box office in only six weeks, after earning popularity of its innovations in visual effects technology.

The milestone achievement makes the James Cameron-directed epic science fiction film ‘the six highest-grossing movies of all time,’ in accordance with Deadline.

The highly-anticipated sequel was reportedly ‘probably the most expensive movies ever made, with a budget estimated at $350 million or more.’

The news comes after Cameron confirmed there will likely be Avatar sequels after saying that the most recent film would definitely make the profit needed to proceed the franchise.

Earlier this month, the director, 68, quipped on HBO Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? that he ‘cannot wiggle out’ of making the ultimate two Avatar movies as his latest flick. 

‘It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the following few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna should do these other sequels,’ he said.

The director added: ‘I do know what I’m going to be doing the following six or seven years.’ 

Previously, the filmmaker has made no secret of the astronomical costs of creating the movie, describing it as ‘very f***** expensive.’ 

The director even said before the discharge of the third instalment that he would end the entire franchise early if audiences don’t appear to ‘give a s***’.

Elsewhere, on the HBO Max show, he referred to the misunderstanding about his comments in regards to the profits needed from The Way Of Water.

The director revealed that he said the film needed to be among the many highest-grossing movies in history to interrupt even, the Metro reported.

But he added that many had taken his comments in another way, pondering that The Way Of Water needed to achieve $2 billion (£1.65bn) and be in the highest 10 to interrupt even.

James explained: ‘[I] never actually gave it a number. I said it will should be among the many highest-grossing movies in history and any person else applied that number and it got picked up. The number is definitely less.’

He then added that he expects to have a discussion with Disney soon about what’s going to occur with Avatar 3.

James continued: ‘We’ve already captured and photographed the entire film, so we’re in prolonged post-production to do all that CG magic. After which Avatar 4 and 5 are each written. We even have a few of 4 within the can.’

The sequel surpassed the previous champion, the monster hit Top Gun: Maverick, following the most recent box office totals, in accordance with Deadline.

The mostly computer-generated film has already made greater than $1.5 billion globally total since its debut in theatres on December 16.

Top Gun: Maverick grossed $1.49 billion during its lengthy theatrical run, which Avatar 2 is more likely to mimic, and the Tom Cruise–starring movie broke streaming records on Paramount+ after it debuted on the service on December 22.
