NFL training camp 2022 live updates: Week 2 preseason games, injury news, roster cuts, Deshaun Watson latest

It’s hard to know yet what Josh McDaniels is absolutely taking a look at roster smart or what to react to in preseason games where the principal goal is for players to walk away unhurt. Doesn’t mean we don’t work up a lather. Running back Josh Jacobs began the preseason opener. Oh my! (Yeah, that was me.) Right tackle Alex Leatherwood got here off the bench in Sunday’s exhibition win over the Vikings. Aha!

They each may mean something, and so they may not. McDaniels — he of the six Super Bowl rings as a Patriots assistant and cloak of secrecy — isn’t saying.

I asked McDaniels on Monday if he could name a defensive player or two who jumped out in Sunday’s win. McDaniels looked like he was going to toss back a solution to my query. But then he stopped and grounded it.

“It will probably be quick with a solution if I said someone specifically stood out,” he said. “I mean there’s loads, they only played 52 plays or whatever it was in order that they played slightly less football. There’s plenty to learn from, I actually consider that.

“There’s a couple of guys that didn’t play numerous plays, and there’s other guys that played a couple of more. Just a few things that we as a gaggle defensively we’re going to learn from and hopefully make progress this week.”
