Purr-fect pairing! Meet Pōhaku the ‘dog-like’ adventure cat who loves climbing and biking on camping trips along with his (human) dad

  • Kyle Kana’iaupuni Robertson, 31, got his cat Pōhaku a 12 months ago and discovered their special connection to nature
  • The pair share a robust bond, go on hikes and bike rides together and never spend much time apart
  • His ‘fluffy son’ sits on Kyle’s shoulders like a parrot and sneaks under the duvet cover at night to be closer to his father
  • Their next adventures will probably be to the beach in Whitby and the Lake District

A cat has gone on a series of camping adventures along with his ‘dad’ – even going climbing with him within the Peak District.

Kyle Kana’iaupuni Robertson, 31, got his cat Pōhaku in March last 12 months and so they have been inseparable since – and he soon discovered his recent pet was ‘dog like’ in his love of adventure.

Chatting with MailOnline about their adventures together, social researcher Kyle said: ‘We each get a bit of separation anxiety and I get excited each time I come home, while he’s a bit annoyed with me for being away.’

After venturing out to a close-by Sheffield park for on-lead walks, Kyle took his ‘furry son’ further afield on hikes through the Peak District where he could let him roam freely.

The successful hikes and later bike rides gave Kyle the thought to check his cat’s camping abilities: ‘I at all times desired to have a cat to do these items with.

‘We just understand one another and feel empathy for one more’, he said.

Pō, as he calls his cat for brief, is a Russian Blue Ragdoll and feels probably the most comfortable sitting on Kyle’s shoulders like a parrot.

Kyle said: ‘We at all times confer with one another, although Pō’s answers sound like ‘brddrddrdd’. He’s really funny and is like a bit of toddler that wishes to be picked up by me sometimes.’

Pōhaku’s name is an homage to Kyle’s Hawaiian roots, where the word has a sacred connotation as ‘produced from the gods’ and goes back to rocks who’ve the ‘mana’ or spirit of Hawaiian gods and other people’s ancestors in them.

For his or her camping adventures, the proud cat dad bought a converted van.

They typically camp a bit away from everyone, so Kyle can leave the doors open and let his cat explore.

He said: ‘He’s already used to traveling within the van and thinks it’s his second home!’

All the time coming with the 2 are Pō’s favourite toy, a rubber frog, his litter box and woolen cave as his bed, but he prefers to remain in his owner’s:

‘Once an hour I wake as much as him scrambling under the duvet and observing me’, the social researcher said.

They went to a campsite near Mam Tor within the Peak District for his or her first trip.

The cat owner said: ‘As soon as we got there, I let him sniff every thing out after which we just walked out into the fields, sat there on a picnic blanket and I drank some red wine while having fun with the sunshine.’

Loads of planning goes into each trip, as Kyle’s priority is for Pō to be comfortable. He said: ‘He doesn’t prefer it when it’s windy or wet like most individuals don’t.

So far, Pō's been to Liverpool to pick up his 'grandma' from Hawaii at the airport. Next on the cards are exploring the Lake District and a trip to a beach - possibly in Whitby - in autumn

‘For the trips, I normally ensure we have now good weather and if we’re on a hike together and I can tell he is not having fun with it, we turn around to go home. It must be for him and shouldn’t be imagined to be a show for other people.’

While he went camping with Pō and one or two other friends before, he doesn’t need to overwhelm his ‘son’ with a giant group.

‘We just have to wait until it’s a bit of cooler. He’s pretty fluffy so I actually have to watch out that he doesn’t overheat’, the London-native said.

Despite wanting to enterprise out further than their home base in Sheffield, going so far as Cornwall ‘may be a bit of much’ for his fluffy friend, in accordance with Kyle.
