The Bachelor star Alex Nation reveals her contraception horror story: ‘I immediately felt like something was unsuitable’

A former Bachelor star has revealed how her IUD birth-control device led to a health emergency after she began experiencing unbearable pain.

Alex Nation, 30, revealed on Tuesday she had her Mirena device inserted in October last yr, six weeks after welcoming her second child.

But she ‘immediately felt like something was unsuitable’ and later learned it had pressed itself against her bowel.

‘I had a number of bleeding. I bled just about each day for seven months, so I might either spot each day or I might get a period – which I shouldn’t – and my periods were really heavy,’ Ms Nation explained.

She also had severe bloating and experienced pain during sex, so went back to her doctor for a check-up.

‘I needed to have an X-ray and it showed my Mirena had perforated my uterus, migrated to my abdomen and was pressed against my bowel,’ she said.

What’s a Mirena (IUD)?

  • A Mirena, or hormonal IUD, is a tool used for contraception that’s inserted into a lady’s uterus
  • It thickens mucus within the cervix to stop sperm from reaching or fertilising an egg, and thins the liner of the uterus and partially suppresses ovulation, in line with the Mayo Clinic
  • If inserted accurately, it may possibly help stop severe menstrual pain and is effective for as much as five years

Ms Nation revealed last month she’d had two abortions – the primary at age 16, and a second when she was 25 – as she criticised the choice by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade.

The choice to overturn Roe v Wade ends the constitutional right to abortion in the USA, meaning individual states can determine whether abortion may be made illegal.

She posted a photograph on Instagram of herself at 16 and said she couldn’t imagine where she can be if that fundamental right was taken away from her.

The mother of two wrote: ‘I’m absolutely devastated for the people in America who’ve lost the correct to make secure and informed decisions about their very own bodies.

‘I’m terrified. I’m terrified for the individuals who will now feel they should take matters into their very own hands. The implications will probably be heartbreaking.

‘I’m indignant, I’m sad and at once I’m in total disbelief that in 2022, Women’s rights are still being taken away from them.’
