Twitter has confirmed 140 redundancies in Dublin, the Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment said.

Leo Varadkar declined to invest if more job losses could possibly be on the best way.

“We did receive, in the end, the redundancy notice from Twitter today within the department, it’s about 140 redundancies,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the staff who’re affected, it’s just over a 3rd of the staff in Dublin can be made redundant, they usually might be assured that they are going to receive numerous government help, whether jobs search to seek out a recent job, whether or not they need to arrange their very own business, we may help with that too, whether it’s going back to education or training.

“I can’t predict the longer term, we have now been informed through the legal strategy of about 140 redundancies, there haven’t been any suggestions at this stage there can be any more.”

Asked if government has planned channels for departments and agencies to speak with the general public on alternative social media sites if Twitter collapses, Mr Varadkar said “speculating concerning the demise of Twitter is a bit premature”.

He added: “Whatever platforms exist government will use them, and there are various other ways to attach with people and disseminate your message than Twitter so we’re not dependant on it by any means to get our message across.”
