Would Chicago Consider One other Tenant, Including an NFL Team, if Bears Leave? Lightfoot Weighs In – NBC Chicago

Chicago officials have recommend quite a lot of proposals to maintain the Bears on the lakefront, but in the event that they were unable to succeed in a deal to maintain the charter NFL franchise on the town, would Mayor Lori Lightfoot consider one other anchor tenant, akin to one other NFL team, at Soldier Field?

Lightfoot unveiled a series of proposals to make the stadium more attractive to the Bears in the long run, including an option that may install a dome structure over the prevailing playing surface.

That project could cost upwards of $2 billion, but when she was asked whether one other tenant would potentially be the goal of such a deal if the Bears move forward with a latest stadium in Arlington Heights, she didn’t rule it out.

“Loads of cities have…two NFL teams,” she said. “I can see that as an option for another person, yes.”

An enormous stumbling block to such a proposal can be an NFL rule that may require the Bears to log out on one other team moving into the market. Teams have veto power on allowing other clubs to maneuver, or expand, into their designated market, and the Bears could either veto that possibility outright, or could attempt to persuade any latest team to share their stadium in Arlington Heights as a substitute.

While there are various cities which have supported multiple NFL teams, and many cities that also support multiple teams in other sports, akin to the Cubs and White Sox in Major League Baseball, there are currently just two NFL markets that boast multiple teams.

The Recent York Giants and Jets have shared a stadium since 1984, when the Jets moved into East Rutherford’s Giants Stadium. In 2010, the 2 teams opened MetLife Stadium, which has since hosted a Super Bowl and various other high-profile events.

Los Angeles, which had supported multiple teams for years, was left with out a team after the Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders moved to Oakland, but they were capable of lure the Rams back in 2016, with the team playing games on the Los Angeles Coliseum while SoFi Stadium was being built.

The Chargers also moved to the Los Angeles area in 2017, playing games at Dignity Health Sports Park, before joining the Rams at their latest venue in 2020.

That stadium recently hosted the Super Bowl, which the Rams won in February.

As for Chicago, town has supported multiple NFL franchises prior to now, with the Arizona Cardinals calling the Windy City home from their inception within the 1920’s until 1960, once they moved to St. Louis.

The Soldier Field project could potentially tackle three different levels of construction. The primary and most intensive would see a dome added over the prevailing stadium, with latest columns added to the top zones to support the structure.

Other options would come with adding columns for a future dome, or to alter the layout of the stadium to potentially function a horny option for more international soccer matches, in addition to improving existing facilities for Chicago Fire FC to stay an anchor tenant within the constructing.
